Two books drives currently underway at The Prairie School are giving families a chance to simultaneously clear their shelves of outgrown reading material and help underserved readers around the Racine area.
Open Wings Learning Center
The SRC is collecting books for the Open Wings Learning Community. According to Director of the SRC, McKenzie Weaver, the Community is a small school for highly challenged learners and currently has very limited resources. The best kind of books for these children would be picture books with lots of repetition or rhyming in the words.
Cops ‘N Kids
Dr. Wheeler’s advisory is doing their third annual book drive for the Cops ‘N Kids reading library in downtown Racine. This organization provides a place for children to read, work with tutors, and interact positively with law enforcement officers and other volunteers. Many books collected in the TPS book drive will go to their holiday book give-away on December 20, so that children can choose free books to give as gifts to their siblings and friends. Julia Witherspoon, founder of Cops -N Kids, told Wheeler’s advisees that the goal is to get more books in children’s homes–books they can keep. The best kind of material for this drive would be gently used books for any age up through middle school.
Where to Donate
Book donation boxes are located in the SRC and near the Primary School and Middle School offices. Books can also be delivered to U-23. Books will be sorted so that they end up at the correct donor site. Books for Cops ‘N Kids will be collected until the morning of December 15. The drive for Open Wings is ongoing.
